Karen Harmsen mainly advises and litigates in the field of financing, security and insolvency law and also in the field of directors’ and auditors’ liability. She has years of experience in acting as a bankruptcy trustee and has advised on various international restructurings.
In addition to law, Karen also studied economics and graduated as a chartered accountant. With this background, she regularly assists auditors and bankruptcy trustees in disputes about the quality of the audit. On 22 September 2019, Karen obtained her Ph.D degree with a thesis on the legal obligation to keep the books and records in relation to the liability for the estate deficit (“Administratieplicht en aansprakelijkheid voor het boedeltekort”, published as volume 115 in Serie Onderneming en Recht, Kluwer 2019).
Karen regularly publishes and teaches in the aforementioned areas of law. Among other things, Karen is a member of the Insolvency Law Committee of the Netherlands Bar Association, the Dutch Association for Insolvency Lawyers (INSOLAD) and the Association for Accounting Law (Vereniging voor Jaarrekeningenrecht). She is a member of the advisory board of foundation responsible for publishing the homeless newspaper in Amsterdam, Stichting Z! and is a member of the supervisory board of Amstelveen Sport.
Marie-Hélène Berghuijs advises and litigates in the fields of both contract law and property law. She has a great fondness for cases in the field of financing, securities and insolvency law and advises in the field of auditors’ liability. In 2013 she completed the Grotius specialization course Financing & Securities cum laude. Marie-Hélène also has a great deal of experience in the field of seizure and foreclosure law.
In addition to litigation before the civil courts, Marie-Hélène has experience in arbitration and mediation. She completed the mediation training of the ADR Institute in 2019. This makes her ideally suited to explore and establish the possibilities of reaching a settlement both before and during proceedings. Marie-Hélène publishes and teaches in these areas of law.
Marie-Hélène is a member of various professional associations and is a board member of the Foundation Ambassadors of the Canal Festival (Stichting Ambassadeurs van het Grachtenfestival).
Rob van den Sigtenhorst specialises in Banking & Finance and Restructuring & Insolvency. Rob is an expert on the ‘Dutch Scheme’ (WHOA or ACPRP/CERP); he was closely involved with its creation and authored the standard commentary on the new law (Tekst & Commentaar) and various other publications. Rob has been working on several large-scale, complex and high-profile (cross-border) restructuring cases, recently among other things HEMA and VoetbalTV.
Rob further advises both lenders and borrowers on all sorts of financing transactions, including corporate (re)financings, acquisition, real estate and project finance, in regular as well as distressed situations.
Working at a New York City firm and as interim legal counsel at ABN AMRO, Rob broadened his horizon and experience.
Rob is a Fellow, INSOL International (honours, first in class), contributor to leading case law reviews, author of the Bankruptcy Act standard commentary, and a member of amongst others INSOL Europe, NACIIL and INSOLAD. Legal500 mentioned Rob as a Next Generation Lawyer (2017, 2018).
Merel Goldschmidt advises and litigates on employment law topics such as collective and individual dismissal, reorganizations, mergers and acquisitions, employment conditions and disability. She assists both national and international clients.
Merel has a great deal of knowledge of and experience with the Top Income Tax Act (Wet Normering Topinkomens) and a special interest in healthcare-related subjects. She is also associated with GZR Updates as an editor.
Merel completed the Grotius specialization course in Employment Law cum laude in 2016 and in 2016 Merel was named Upcoming Legal Talent by Legal Woman.
Parisa Jahan advises and litigates in commercial disputes, particularly in the field of financing, securities and insolvency law and (directors’ and auditors’) liability law.
In 2017 Parisa completed the masters in Private Law and Law and Business at Utrecht University. Parisa joined TOON in July 2021. Previously, she worked at Houthoff in the Litigation & Arbitration practice group. Due to her previous experience with complex cross-border disputes, Parisa has an eye for the relevant international and national (procedural) aspects in a case. For example, she is happy to advise on inter alia the possibilities of attachment, motions contesting jurisdiction and the question of which law applies to claims.
Parisa publishes in the field of procedural law and liability law.
Aladár Bleeker is the COO of TOON. He ensures that all employees of TOON can focus on their practice.
Aladár has years of experience as head of human recourses at a leading law firm and as a partner at a a medium-sized boutique firm, where he focused on business development and client relations. Partly on the basis of that experience, Aladár advises companies on their organization and human resources. He also advises companies on the composition of their (legal) teams and coaches individual team members.
Aladár is a member of the advisory board of the Van Gogh Museum and a board member of the Foundation Ambassadors of the Canal Festival (Stichting Ambassadeurs van het Grachtenfestival).
Marcel van Rosmalen is TOONˊs office manager. He has extensive experience as a personal assistant to lawyers at an international law firm and medium-sized boutique firm. In the evening hours Marcel is a group fitness instructor.
Robert ten Have is advisor to TOON. Previously, Robert was an attorney/partner at two leading law firms and a medium-sized boutique firm. Robert followed the professional training course as ADR-specialist and legal mediator at the ADR Institute and currently works independently as mediator.
